The future of America is in our hands - why I'm voting for John Kerry
Mon Nov 01, 2004 at 06:59:27 PM PDT
There's just one choice for America on Nov. 2, and his name is John Kerry.
From Vietnam to the U.S. Senate, John Kerry has shown leadership, integrity and thoughtfulness, values which our country so desperately needs as each day brings news of ever-increasing entanglement in Iraq and more layoffs, plant shutdowns and outsourcing here at home.

As noted here by ex-GenDean honcho Michael Whitney, the Kerry campaign seems intent on shooting itself in the foot not just once, but with BOTH barrels of that shotgun JFK was using.

We have not yet begun to fight, or, a Storm veteran's tale of Arizona

This piece was originally published in The (Contra Costa College) Advocate today... I thought I'd share it with the Kossacks as well.
Despite uphill battle, Deaniacs keep fighting
Somewhere north of Fresno, a darkened Greyhound bus loaded with college students hurtles through the darkness. It's half past midnight on Monday. We've been on a bus for 13 hours and there are still three hours to go before we're home.
The mood onboard is upbeat despite the knowledge that classes start in just eight hours, and though sleep had been a hard commodity to come by in the last two days, few were napping. Instead, the talk was all politics -- we had just spent a day and a half blitzing Phoenix, knocking on doors, waving signs and telephoning Democrats, asking them to come out and vote for Howard Dean in the state's Feb. 3 primary election.
If Dean loses, does Nader run?
Wed Jan 28, 2004 at 05:02:28 PM PDT
I signed up for the Nader Exploratory Committee e-mail list (so I could send him a comment that I don't think he should run) and I just got this in my in-box. Comments?
Kerry and Edwards - Ballot Access Issues?
Mon Jan 26, 2004 at 11:56:32 PM PDT
I've heard rumors floating about that while locked in their earlier doldrums, neither Kerry nor Edwards were able to field full slates of delegates in some states, including, hugely, New York.
If that's true, what impact will it have on the nomination race? Will Dean or Clark grab more juice out of New York?
Dean rally in Des Moines crashed by Rethugs
Sat Jan 17, 2004 at 08:05:37 PM PDT
The cold war in Des Moines just turned hot - a bunch of rabid College Republicans crashed a Joan Jett/Janeane Gareafalo rally for Howard Dean at Drake University fifteen minutes ago.
To arms! To Iowa! (Or: One Kossian's frozen odyssey)
Tue Jan 13, 2004 at 05:26:09 AM PDT
I'm headed to Iowa tomorrow to spend the week leading up to the caucuses (including caucus day) volunteering for Howard Dean. I'm bringing a laptop, so I'll try to get online at least daily to put a little on-the-ground perspective in my diaries.
Dean "not playing by the rules" - but that's a GOOD thing.
Wed Dec 31, 2003 at 02:33:37 AM PDT
I originally posted a version of this in Josh in Chitown's diary, as a reply to his implication that, by declining federal matching funds, Howard Dean was somehow "not playing by the rules."
I posit not only that he IS playing by the rules, but that if he wasn't, it's a GOOD thing. Accepting matching funds may be this great altruistic ideal, but it's suicide against Rove.
Firstly, I believe the campaign finance rules were clearly set up to limit massively-funded insider campaigns backed by a few megadollar corporate donors who give thousands of dollars - like Bush.
The rules were NOT intended to keep a massive popular groundswell of grassroots support from resoundingly supporting a populist candidate with hundreds of thousands of small-dollar donations - like Dean.
Dean's campaign IS campaign finance reform DEFINED. Lots of average people giving small donations, swamping and overpowering the possible influence of a few large donors. That IS the little-d AND big-D democratic ideal. THAT is how we beat Bush. The power and purse of the people.
FLASH: "Draft-dodgers" more likely to be elected than veterans
Tue Nov 25, 2003 at 01:51:42 AM PDT
It's true. Five of the past six Presidential election cycles have featured showdowns between a veteran and a non-vet, and IN ALL FIVE ELECTIONS, the NON-VETERAN won.
Gay marriage: Our hope vs. their fear
Mon Nov 24, 2003 at 07:59:15 PM PDT
I wanted to break this post out of a long thread below, made in reply to an opponent of gay marriage. I think it explains how we need to frame the issue - and how eventually, we will prevail.
I smell fear from social conservatives, people who want a theocracy and people who want to be able to tell Americans what they can do, who they can love, what they can do with their bodies and how they can express themselves.
You're afraid because you know you're losing the national debate, and despite every effort to turn the tide (God Hates Fags, DoMA and other such demagoguery) you're still losing.
DailyKOS gets play on Poynter blog

I subscribe to the
Poynter Institute's myriad e-mail newsletters for the story ideas and gossip... and I was surprised to see this entry on their
STUMP campaign diary blog praising sipples' coverage of the Iowa JJ dinner:
Dreier won't run against Boxer

Per AP wire reports, Republican Rep. David Dreier has decided not to give up his Rules Committee chairmanship to make a run against Barbara Boxer next year.

Budget meeting in Maui
Per this SacBee story, dozens of state legislators are heading to a "budget meeting" at the swanky (and ultra-expensive) Sheraton Maui.
The punchline? It's hosted by the state's most powerful union - the prison guards.
Dean busts fundraising goal by $40k
Mon Nov 03, 2003 at 05:13:15 PM PDT
I do recall that some Kosovians pooh-poohed Howard Dean's Halloween fundraising drive, saying "It looks like his supporters are tapped out."
Erm, no.
His "Bush Frightens Me, Frighten Bush Back" campaign put up real bats, and set a goal of $310,000 by Sunday at midnight.
The final tally: $354,891.48.
So much for "tapped out." Dean's just beginning to tap INTO his widening support base.
Dean unveils economic plan - and it's a winner
Thu Oct 16, 2003 at 07:02:51 PM PDT
Disclaimer: I'm a Deanite.
Howard Dean trotted out his detailed economic plan today - Reclaiming the American Dream - and it's got some interesting bits inside.
